HeadwayHealth has provided a range of psychological interventions and support services to families, parents, young adults and school aged children since 2008. We provide general psychology services for emotional and behavioural concerns, as well as offering specific skills and strategies for those dealing with health concerns to assist well-being.

We are now expanding our services to include a program for children aged 5-12 years who are dealing with a health diagnosis themselves, or in someone close to them.

HeadwayHealth’s Next Program for Kids

A one-on-one program is being offered for primary school aged children (5-12 years old) whose parents are effected by cancer or other illnesses. The program has been specifically designed to help children deal with the changes and adjustments that occur within the family and their daily routines,  as well as any worries and anxiety that commonly arise. Children will learn strategies for identifying and managing feelings; learning about their stress responses and how to relax their bodies; coping with worries, and fostering resilience.

Interventions and strategies are based on established evidence -based cognitive-behavioural techniques that are current best practice. As the program is delivered individually, it allows for age appropriate and personalised tailoring of strategies to ensure a child has the maximum benefit. The course  aims to teach coping skills that the child can use both now and in the future.

Parents/carers will be advised of the option to seek a GP Mental Health Care Plan to assess eligibility to access Medicare rebates to assist with fees. Families will be asked to attend an initial assessment with Jennifer Jones in Term 3 to talk about their needs, and the program itself will commence in Term 4.

Initial assessment times in Term 3 are available Weds 13th and Weds 20th September 2017. (2 – 6pm) (Appointment 1)

Dates of Term 4 program:  Weds 18th Oct, Weds 25th Oct, Weds 1st Nov, Weds 8th Nov, and Weds 15th Nov 2017. (2 – 6pm) (Appointments 2-6).
